- I finished watching Kaneto Shindo’s film called “Kuroneko” yesterday and, excluding “The Tree of Life”, it is the best film I’ve seen in awhile. I signed up for a month’s free trial of Hulu Plus, and they’re offering all these unreleased Criterion licensed films of which “Kuroneko” is one of them. It’s this spooky horror story about a wife and mother murdered by samurai who make a deal with the devil to live as ghosts and vow to murder every samurai that crosses their paths in hopes of killing those who killed them. Shindo uses the black and white of the picture so well, often adding weird background changes and impressionistic lighting to highlight the ghosts. It’s hard to explain, but if you sign up for Hulu free for a week you should totally check it out.
